Capping off a big week

June 30, 2008

This past weekend capped off a huge week for the island.  During the week the annual Newport to Bermuda race concluded, with a huge party for the racers and residents celebrating their trip.  The race occurs every two years and is the oldest ocean race for amateur sailors in the world, and this year featured close to 200 different ships and their crews.  The boats are really impressive looking once they are all docked and are flying their signal flags.

The weekend also marked our celebration of Canada day (3 days early) for us Canadians, and Independence Day for the yanks (a full 6 days earlier).  The Canadians’ party is a large bash on the beach fueled by sun, alcohol and the ocean.  Everyone’s welcome and the crowds are huge.  We went for a little bit, but found the crowd to be mostly people we didn’t know and a tad older so we didn’t stay long.  Later in the evening we took in the Americans’ 25 minute fireworks show, which caps off a huge all day party featuring over 6,000 people.  The fireworks were not as impressive as advertised and finished second in our minds to those that follow the Christmas boat parade, but they were still nice. What was also impressive, was one of the local hotels was also setting off fireworks also to mark the holiday so for most of the show we had fireworks going off above us on both on the left and right.

I included the second fireworks picture even though it’s not that great for authenticity purposes.  I don’t want people thinking we just uploaded some fireworks clipart and tried to pass it off as our own.  The second picture you can clearly see our concrete concrete cylos (2nd concrete intentional), no one can call bull$hit.

Sunday we went parasailing, more on that adventure tomorrow….
