Yah that will work

May 4, 2009

The world economic crisis has been particularly taxing on the little island we call home’s economy.  Where the top two employment sectors (outside of working for your cousin or auntie the government) is based on tourism and investments a worldwide recession is bad for business.

This is especially true if you’re say the Fairmont Southhampton who’s in the business normally of selling $500-$600 a night rooms during the summertime.  Those kind of prices in this kind of climate are about as popular being pounded in the groin with a hammer, sure some can handle it – but for most they’ll take a pass.

In a surprising effort to combat the problem, Fairmont recently had $99 a night promotion for 99 hours.  News of that kind of deal (80% off regular rates) spreads faster than pig flu in a Mexico slum thanks to the Internet and it was huge hit.  In the 99 hours, the Fairmont sold 14,000 rooms.  They say that’s about 4,000 separate bookings, which sounds like a lot.  Among them are friends to the woods coming in June for a little vacation, and we’re happy to have even more visitors for the 2009 season.

Hooray visitors…. t-minus 6 days til the first batch arrive….
